St. Stephen’s Music Program highlighted at International Spirituality and Music Conference
St. Stephen’s Music Program was the subject of an academic research paper given this month at the “1st International Conference on Spirituality and Music Education” in Birmingham, England. The paper was given by Prof. Mary Kennedy, of the University of Victoria, BC. The title of Dr. Kennedy’s paper is “The Musical World of St Stephens: where music, education and spirituality interconnect.” An excerpt from the paper’s abstract reads:
“The purpose of the study was to investigate the ‘musical world’ of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington, to determine the causes for its existence and the factors influencing its maintenance and future survival. In particular the study focused on the musical learning and teaching that occurred in the church’s musical groups and its connection to the spiritual lives of the participants…. Interestingly, this musical participation often led to an increased awareness of the spiritual dimension resulting in a stronger sense of faith on the part of participants.”
Dr. Kennedy was an active participant in St. Stephen’s music program for several years while she was completing her PhD in Music Education at the University of Washington. To read the paper’s full abstract, please go here.
While she was a professor at Rutgers University, Dr. Kennedy also published a paper about St. Stephen’s productions of Noye’s Fludde, entitled, “The Experience of Noye’s Fludde : a church and community adventure in music-making and learning” – published in the March 2003 issue of the quarterly journal, “Music Education Research.”
